PISA 2025: Colombia Faces Significant Educational Challenges

September 8, 2026 | Education · Youth · Technology
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) released the results of PISA 2025 on September 8, 2026. The international assessment measures the knowledge and skills of 15-year-old students, with more than 760,000 students from 91 countries and economies taking part.
In Colombia, average performance in 2025 remained relatively stable compared with 2022 in science, mathematics, and reading. However, the country continued to perform below the OECD average in all three areas. Only 29% of Colombian students reached at least Level 2 proficiency in mathematics, compared with 65% across the OECD. In reading, 46% reached this minimum level, compared with 69% across the OECD, while 50% reached Level 2 or higher in science, compared with 74% across OECD countries.
PISA 2025 also assessed computational problem-solving and learning in digital environments. Colombian students performed below the OECD average in computational problem-solving.
The assessment also provides relevant insights into the growing role of artificial intelligence in education. 56% of Colombian students reported using AI chatbots to support their learning at least once a week, compared with 46% across the OECD.
These findings highlight the continued need to strengthen educational quality, equity, innovation, and the skills young people need to thrive in increasingly digital societies
